Many have asked me why did my husband and I removed our children out of the public school system and started homeschooling. They still attend public school, but do it at home. They have certified teachers for all subjects, except for PE lol. It is so much more work on their end, but I am assured that they will not miss anything they need to learn with this system.
We were blessed to say we never had bullying issues, most the teachers and schools were awesome, and our children performed well academically and socially. Everyone loved Titus' personality, Brooke was Miss Brains & Social-bug, and Gracelyn was Miss Helper or always trying to find ways to help and fix the system (Editor of Year Book, School Volunteering Program, Video Editing Club, Debate club, & Band). However, we did noticed the school systems had a strong impact of framing our children's mindset to work for someone else or what I called "a 9 to 5 mentality," and decrease their lack of confidence due to the comparison and high pressure to preform. There is nothing wrong for working for others, but I'm not sure this is for everyone. So instead of encouraging them to dream; it was more of how they needed to preform in order to fit into different environments for them to thrive. In other words, more of how to become someone's slave or consumer and not producer in order to help their surroundings or community. Yes the entire school volunteered one time a year in middle school, but I'm not sure the students understood servicing others to make the world a better place was a lifestyle and another way to help solve problems. Plus we wanted them to receive an individual learning environment and not what a few people said they should do and can't do.
For an example, our oldest daughter will be taking college courses this school year which will count towards her high school diploma. Basically she passed a test that indicated she is already on a college level, so why would we prevent her from going to college now? Our youngest daughter already passed the test for college, but she is to young so she will start next school year. Titus has one of the best speech professional now in Alpharetta, GA outside of the school system. We are encouraging them to dream. Gracelyn now has time to teach Bible classes in her Faith Club, write for her blog - Gracelives, and think of ways to improve TeenHOP, their non-profit.
Many scholars have suggested that the successful future strategists will exploit an entrepreneurial mindset the ability to quickly sense, act, and mobilize, even under uncertain conditions (Ireland et al., 2003: 963–989). We believe at Teens Help Other People (TeenHOP) it is important to teach the mindset of an entrepreneur at an early age so youth can become and understand entrepreneurship is not just about having brains, passion, or capital, but having an entrepreneurial mindset. TeenHOP invited successful Sophie L. Giibson, the owner of VIVO360 - Advertising Business to help a few TeenHOP members learn what it means to have an entrepreneurial mindset. Please watch a glimpse of the training below.
TeenHOP provide their members with leadership trainings each quarter and one week of Leadership summer camp each year. If you will like to learn more about TeenHOP, please go to www.teenhop.com. If you can't see the video below CLICK HERE
