Bang STRESS During the Holidays!

Be Active
 The Holidays can be the worst time of the year for many people. Lets look at a few things you can do to help you cope with the pressures of the Holidays and tools to implement positive mental changes.

1. Get Involved
Staying home or withdrawing is not the best way to overcome negative feelings you may experience during this time of the year.  Interacting with others has been shown to improve our mental and physical wellbeing as this interaction produces the hormone, oxytocin, which can benefit our immune system, heart health and cognitive function. Find places you can volunteer for a charity or local community organization. Attend parties or events that promote laughter, dancing, and encouragement.

2. Drink Reasonably
Most holiday parties involve social drinking. Yes the consumption of alcohol might cause you to become more relaxed, but please remember that alcohol is a depressant and drinking excessive amounts can cause low mood, irritability or potentially aggressive behavior. By not exceeding the recommended number of safe units, you will be better able to sustain good mental and physical wellbeing.

3. Be active
Exercising is not always fun but it has a way to release endorphins, which helps with relaxation and boost your mood. Try walking, running, cycling, dancing, or anything to help get your heart to beat faster.  This can help decrease depression or reduce anxiety.

This time of year can be very stressful because of the different things that are expected from you. Please take time to take breaks when you are feeling overwhelmed or too much pressure. Don’t allow yourself to go overboard with spending money you don’t have. These negative feelings can produce symptoms of anxiety, anger and difficulty sleeping.
